World of Work Day from the Placement, Employment & Experience Team at Walsall Manor Hospital

June 6, 2025

On Tuesday 3rd June a group of Year 7 pupils were lucky enough to tour various departments at Walsall Manor Hospital.

Split into three groups they visited

  • The Image Department- where the pupils learned all about state-of-the-art CT scans. These are highly detailed computer images that can be taken of any part of the body, including bones, muscles, fat, organs, and blood vessels.
  • The Faculty of Simulation where the pupils were introduced to a life-size mannequin which had a pulse, blinked, sighed and even screamed, finding out that it cost £95,000!
  • The Infection Control where they were shown how ineffective everyday hand-washing can be. The pupils scrubbed their hands clean – or so they thought- but then looked at them under UV lighting and were surprised at the amount of germs that can still linger.

After lunch, the group took part in three further workshops all about the value and availability of apprenticeships in the workplace.  Jacqui Watkeys, an ex Blue Coat Pupil herself, showed the pupils around the hospital’s library department where the star exhibit was a futuristic Sleeping Pod where tired nurses and doctors can recharge and reinvigorate themselves between shifts. After a final quiz centred on logos in the world of business, the group were awarded goodie bags containing water bottles, diaries and pens.

Thank you to all of the staff from Walsall NHS Trust for facilitating this day and to Miss Addison, Miss Bradnock, Miss Tariq and Mr Howell (Blue Coat staff) and Naimh from the King’s Trust.

As a Rights Respecting School we recognise that trips like this open the eyes and minds of our pupils, showcasing the various careers that are available, in this instance, within the medical profession (Right 29)
